Natalia Southern is a Director in the Economic & Financial Consulting practice. She is an experienced senior executive and economist with more than 25 years' working in a range of Commonwealth and State public policy, regulatory and oversight bodies.

Natalia has extensive experience in:

  • report writing across a broad range of issues and sectors

As a consultant, Natalia has advised both government and private sector clients on policy and regulatory matters particularly in the energy, water and transport sectors. Natalia has also advised and supported several inquiries including Parliamentary and Ministerial inquiries.

Prior to joining FTI Consulting, Natalia was the Deputy Secretary, Energy and Resources in the Victorian Department of Economic Development, Jobs, Transport and Resources – responsible for overseeing energy and earth resources policy and legislative program, and the earth resources regulator.

Natalia advised the Minister for Resources and liaised with senior bureaucrats across the public service and represented Victoria at the COAG Energy Council Senior Committee of Officials.

Natalia has also held several senior roles at the Victorian Essential Services Commission overseeing advice and reports on highly complex economic regulatory issues in infrastructure industries and government businesses. She Chaired the Independent Panel established to review the Australian Energy Regulator’s 2018 binding rate of return guideline.

Natalia was also the former Assistant Auditor General, Performance Audit at the Victorian Auditor-General’s Office. Here she oversaw more than 100 performance audits examining the efficiency and effectiveness of the Victorian public sector. She also provided strategic advice to the Auditor-General on the risks facing the Victorian public sector, and performance audit priorities and strategies.

Natalia began her career at the Industry Commission and later Productivity Commission, and has held senior positions at the National Competition Council and Victorian Department of Treasury and Finance.
