Jen Maki, Ph.D., is a Managing Director in the Center for Healthcare Economics and Policy at FTI Consulting. Her work includes commercial due diligence, market assessments, the analysis and modeling of factors that drive demand for healthcare products and services, and assessment of trends in the delivery of healthcare. Her clients include private equity funds, healthcare providers and product manufacturers, and legal counsel.
Dr. Maki regularly works with IQVIA data, commercial claims data and Medicare data to assess demand for healthcare products, price variation and evaluate treatment patterns. Working with a major medical product manufacturer recently acquired by a private equity firm, Dr. Maki led a project to improve profitability and refine the company’s product line. The project included a country analysis to assess market attractiveness and identify which markets the firm should grow, optimize, or harvest and exit. The second component of the project was a profitability study to assess true product-level profitability, identify avoidable costs, and quantify return on investment.
Using claims data on an engagement, Dr. Maki evaluated the geographic variation in treatment, by treatment type, for individuals diagnosed with autism and investigated the relationship between initial treatment intensity and future healthcare cost and utilization. The findings were used to show that intensive early treatment can reduce long term healthcare costs.
Dr. Maki conducted a demand assessment for an academic medical center considering a significant capital investment in new technology. The project included developing a microsimulation model to predict the demand for proton beam therapy (PBT) as a treatment for various types of cancer. Other aspects of the project included assessing competition from other PBT centers, reimbursement rates, and treatment guidelines, all in an effort to better understand the financial implications of moving forward with the proposed project.
Dr. Maki often works on litigation matters addressing liability and quantifying damages. On a recent case, she provided information about the healthcare landscape. As a testifying expert in opioid related litigation, she provided information regarding geographic variation in utilization and information relating to changes in treatment patterns of care for pain. For another client, Dr. Maki assessed the effects of a healthcare equipment supply shortage and how this shortage impacted patient choice, including specific modality of treatment and provider selection. These results were used to determine damages in litigation proceedings.
Dr. Maki is an active researcher and has written on topics including digital health and issues related to cost-effectiveness, utilization, and equity; the effects of informational interventions on individual decision-making; and on tobacco policies and their effect on smoking cessation. Her research articles have been published in peer reviewed journals, including the Southern Economic Journal and the International Journal of Drug Policy.
Dr. Maki holds a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from Arizona State University, a Master’s in Accounting from the University of Notre Dame, and both a Master’s and a Ph.D. in Economics from North Carolina State University with fields of specialization in Health Economics and Labor Economics. She also holds a position as an Academic Associate at Arizona State University’s College of Health Solutions and teaches a Masters level Health Economics course.
