Erasmus Theron is a Managing Director at FTI Consulting. He is a member of the Financial and Litigation Consulting practice and is based in Cape Town.

Erasmus works in the Business Transformation team providing and implementing global trade solutions which include, operating models and support processes, supply chain, procurement, benefits analysis, model building, and project management. Erasmus has more than 18 years’ industry expertise in Customs and Excise related consulting and dispute advisory services.

Erasmus previously led one of the Big Four consulting firms’ South African Customs and Global Trade Practice and has considerable experience in industries impacted by Customs and Excise legislation, both locally and within Africa, ranging from alcoholic beverages, tobacco, petroleum, clothing and textiles, to retail and fast-moving consumer goods. He managed various Pan African landed cost modelling projects and assisted clients with streamlining and development of various Customs and Excise related risk control frameworks to manage trade compliance and duty at source and excise/levy compliance for tobacco, spirits, wine, sugar sweetened beverages and petroleum products.

Erasmus has extensive experience in the interpretation and application of Southern African Customs and Excise related legislation and consults and provide legal advice to manufacturers of goods subject to Customs and Excise duties and has assisted clients impacted by Customs and Excise legislation on matters ranging from Customs and Excise strategy to the preparation and submission of tax and legislative proposals to SARS and National Treasury. 

Erasmus has been involved in developing customs and excise related business process analyses offerings that manages duty and trade regulatory requirements from source to general ledger level for various multinationals including ERP platform optimization to provide for all duty related triggers and developing key control frameworks, simplifying the external audit and legal compliance of Customs and Excise related activities.

He has conducted several customs related process efficiency reviews at multinationals to manage the risks associated with the import and subsequent distribution/ export of goods ranging from supplier reviews to customs valuation and tariff classification assistance. Erasmus also assisted various clients with responses to assessments raised by revenue authorities ranging from managing the dispute process to settlement/litigation support services.

Erasmus holds an BLC, LLB, (cum laude) from the University of Pretoria and he is an admitted attorney of the High Court of South Africa and was previously a practicing Advocate and member of the Pretoria Bar. Erasmus also lectures the Customs and Excise module of the H.Dip., Tax and LLM programme at the University of Stellenbosch.
