Brian Kushner is a Senior Managing Director at FTI Consulting and is based in Dallas. Dr. Kushner is the Leader of the Private Capital Advisory Services practice and also co-leads the Activism and M&A Solutions, Technology and Aerospace, Defense and Government Contracting (“A&D”) practices.
Over the past 20 years, Dr. Kushner has served as Chairman, Director, CEO/interim CEO or CRO of over a dozen public and private telecom, media and technology (“TMT”) and defense companies, including serving as the CEO of four telecom companies, two software companies and a mid-tier defense contractor.
In addition, Dr. Kushner has led more than 50 engagements involving all aspects of TMT and A&D, as well as staffing solutions, payment processors, semiconductors, gaming, aerospace MRO, auto parts manufacturing and data center providers. These projects have involved every aspect of corporate performance, including strategy and go-to-market planning, revenue enhancement, cost cutting, supply chain management, digital and social marketing strategy and complex restructuring.
Dr. Kushner co-founded CXO, L.L.C., which was acquired by FTI Consulting in 2008. Over the last decade, Dr. Kushner and his former CXO partners have bought or sold more than 20 companies and have conducted diligence on more than 40 TMT, consumer electronics and manufacturing companies for private equity and hedge funds, along with providing assistance to organizations in revenue enhancement, cybersecurity, digital strategy, outsourcing, governance and SG&A cost reduction.
In addition to his role at FTI Consulting, Dr. Kushner also currently serves as the Lead Independent Director of an ultrahigh reliability international telecom and mobile services company with operations in Europe, Asia and Latin America and an extensive IP portfolio.
Dr. Kushner was previously the Managing Member/Director and interim CEO of an IT services defense contractor with operations at major U.S. military installations and in Iraq and Afghanistan, and formerly Chairman of the Innovative Companies in the U.S. Virgin Islands, British Virgin Islands and Saint Maarten. Prior to this, he served as the CRO of Relativity Media. He also was the CEO and acting Chairman of Sage Telecom, a Texas CLEC which was sold to a strategic buyer in 2012. He led the turnaround of Sage from a loss to EBITDA of 18 percent of revenues in nine months, reducing bad debt from over 11 percent to about two percent and monthly churn from over 7.5 percent to less than four percent in the same timeframe. As CEO and then Director of Pacific Crossing, the former Asia-Pacific affiliate of Global Crossing, Dr. Kushner led the company through a contentious bankruptcy in the U.S., Japan, UK and Bermuda, where he stabilized operations, grew revenue, generated profits and positive cash flow and resolved over $2 billion in claims, resulting in the sale of the company to NTT in 2009.
At wine.com, Dr. Kushner restructured the company through litigation, regulatory issues, credit card fraud and chargeback challenges, growing revenues, leading an IT systems modernization and resolving supplier problems. As CRO and CEO at Intira, the managed applications data center company, Dr. Kushner brought the company to cash flow neutral in 60 days and closed a 363 sale to a strategic buyer. Other recent operational and advisory engagements have included several technology and logistics company assignments, Broadview Networks, Holley Performance Auto Products, Isola GMBH, Midway Games, Monster, Nortel, One Communications, Outfront Media (formerly CBS Outdoor), Playboy, PRC, PR Wireless, Sequa, Spansion, Standard Register, XO Communications, several cable firms and many confidential assignments.
Dr. Kushner began his career at BDM International, a defense firm, where, after 10 years, he was Chief Scientist with oversight over Advanced Technology, turnarounds and all DARPA business.
Dr. Kushner has been a testifying expert in over a dozen large matters relating to all aspects of TMT, IT, data centers and M&A. Dr. Kushner was the 1997 recipient of KPMG’s Information, Communications and Entertainment Entrepreneur of the Year award in Austin for Industry Leadership in Entrepreneurial Companies of less than 200 Employees.
Dr. Kushner currently serves on the Board of Directors at Luxfer Holdings, where he sits on the Audit, Nominating & Governance and Remuneration committees. He also is a Board member and the Chair of the Audit committee at Dex Media, and a Board Member, Chair of the Audit committee and a member of the Governance committee at Zodiac Interactive. Dr. Kushner previously served as a Board member and Chairman of the Audit committee at EveryWare Global, and as the lead Director and member of the Audit committee at Damovo.
Dr. Kushner holds a B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. in Applied & Engineering Physics, the latter with a minor in Electrical Engineering, from Cornell University. He was the December 2014 Commencement Speaker for the University of Texas at Austin’s College of Natural Sciences.
