Industry Alert - Safe Night Out Strategy

Corporate Finance & Restructuring

April 24, 2014

As a result of the recent Safe Night Out survey, the Queensland Government has issued a draft Action Plan to restore responsible behaviour and respect, stamp out alcohol and drug-related violence and ensure Queensland’s nightlife is safe for all. FTI Consulting takes a closer look at what impact the draft Action Plan may have on licensed venue operators in Queensland.

The initial Safe Night Out survey identified what were considered to be the main issues affecting locals and tourists in the Queensland area. Further to this, the survey and consequent review focused on highlighting strategies that would be most effective in addressing irresponsible behaviour and the alcohol and drug-related violence issues identified.

While some strategies pinpointed focused on greater penalties, increased policing and more education around the key issues, a few tactics highlighted by the survey would directly impact vendors, such as reduced trading hours and the implementation of responsible service of alcohol. Although not implemented into law yet, the strategies being trialled could affect the way local businesses operate so that they continue to remain viable.
